Hermann Göring
Time period in service: 1933-1945
Leading member of the Nazi Party
Göring serves in the German air force as a fighter pilot. Both wounded and decorated, by the end of the war, he is one of the best-known German air force war heroes.
Göring meets Hitler at a Nazi Party rally and will subsequently join the Nazi Party.
He created the secret state police, that was later controlled by Heinrich Himmler. Göring fined one billion marks for damages that the Nazis had created. Göring ordered SS leader Reinhard Heydrich to begin preparations for a "general solution of the Jewish question" in conquered territories. With him assuming that the Nazis would defeat the Soviet Union, Göring was involved in post-war-planning. By 1940, he was at the peak of his power and influence; as minister in charge of the Four Year Plan, he was responsible for much of the functioning of the German economy in the build-up to World War II. He was sentenced to death by hanging, but committed suicide by ingesting cyanide the night before the sentence was to be carried out.
