Causes of the Holocaust
There is no single cause that can be pinpointed as the #1 cause for the Holocaust. There are many factors that have to be considered. The Holocaust was something that grew very gradually.
One factor is one that dates back to early Christianity. Many people blame Jews for the murder of Jesus Christ. In the 1870s, Roman authorities opposed Jews and they destroyed the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. They also forced Jews to leave Palestine.
After World War I had ended, the Germans quickly blamed the Jews for WWI and the Treaty of Versailles. Hitler took advantages of the weakness of his rivals to enhance his party and rise. After WWI the German economy suffered tremendously. German pride was bruised. Many Germans began to notice that Jewish people had begun to make good lives for themselves. The Jews were an important part in the European Society and the Germans were getting jealous, so because the German economy was not what it once was, it was easy to use the Jews for a scapegoat. Nazi propaganda made it easy for the Nazis to begin spreading their message of hate and gradually gaining new followers. “ ...pure, unfettered racism combined with various political and economic situations, mingled with more than a small bit of jealousy, was enough to set the Holocaust in motion and eventually lead to the death of millions of people”(6). As Nazi tyranny spread across Europe, the Germans and their collaborators harassed and murdered millions of other people. German police officials targeted thousands of political opponents. The Jewish community was seen as alien within much of Europe.
A lot of people in the countries around the world didn't even know what was going on in Germany in the concentration camps because there were no cell phones or social media to spread the word. Even those who did try to help ended up getting killed themselves or stopped helping because they knew they would get killed. Others were too scared to even try to do anything because they knew the consequences if they tried to help or spoke up. This was also during the war and the Allied Powers were fighting the war so they couldn’t really help.
Hitler had everyone in Germany so convinced that the Jews were so bad and everything bad that happened to Germany was their fault. Hitler had a way of speaking that mesmerized the audiences across Germany putting everyone under his spell to punish the Jews. The Germans thought that the Jews had this impulse for world domination and wanted to get rid of the Germans, and the Germans couldn't let that happen, so they decided to get rid of them first. It was a race to the finish line, but the Germans got there first.
